The ENHANCE Foundation

Please don't...

The Enhance Foundation mission is about increasing awareness and improving the quality of language and attitudes used to and about those with autism and other special needs.

This site is dedicated to highlighting how destructive language can be, and how it can lead to abusive attitudes and behaviour.

Some words are becoming acceptable in everyday situations, destroying the lives of those who are unable to change the way they are seen.

No-one would approve of bullying, yet everyday those most vulnerable in society are subjected to a variety of inappropriate language and actions used against them.

The victims don't often have the social skills, voice or capability to deal with these things in an effective manner.

Often, people most affected are those carrying mental or physical disability. In today's society, these individuals are the majority of those targeted and it's often seen as socially acceptable due to lack of understanding.

Alike sexism, homophobia, ageism, racism, religious discrimination and even positive discrimination, to show disrespect to an individual due to a mental or physical ability or disability is highly unfair and may lead to disastrous results.

Judging others

Judging is a form of prejudicial behaviour against an individual not perceived as being the same as the those within a wider society. These are often based upon pre-conceived ideas without knowing the person.

This can be seen as a form of ridicule or bullying regardless of whether the individual targeted is showing signs of being affected by it.

Even though some conditions may be invisible or unapparent, these differences may trigger a lack of respect and empathy towards the individual affected.

To help overcome this, please get to know someone first. You may be surprised at the outcome.

Many people who have these conditions can;

  • Look normal but their disability may be invisible
  • Lack ability to communicate
  • Act in an erratic and perceivably socially unacceptable way
  • Move around differently to others
  • Make strange noises
  • Appear disobedient
  • Appear ignorant instead of timid
  • Self-harm out of frustration

The right language

Using the right language towards each other is common courtesy and which should be afforded to friends and strangers alike. None of us like to be spoken to in a disrespectful manner irrespective of any differences we may have.

Disrespectful language can be seen as a form of ridicule or bullying regardless of whether the individual targeted is showing signs of being affected by it.

Even though some conditions may be invisible or unapparent, these differences may trigger a lack of respect and empathy towards the individual affected.

To help overcome this, please get to know someone first. You may come to like them.

Because many conditions show themselves in an unsocial manner, there are a few things that should be kept in mind. Such as;

  • We're all equal.
  • We're all entitled to the same respect.
  • Some conditions aren't down to preference and actions may be uncontrollable such as being; distant, pensive, wistful, rude or difficult.
  • Some may find it difficult to act appropriately in general situations.

It's unacceptable to use the following language against someone;

  • Retard
  • Window licker
  • Nerd
  • Geek
  • Spastic
  • Weirdo
  • Mong
  • Freak
  • Creep
  • Cripple
  • Flid
  • Pleb

These names may seem amusing, but if you were on the receiving end, you wouldn't find it acceptable and may retaliate in an entirely different way.
